The group's offices are located in a new building in Potsdam in Germany, in a science park comprising the science departments of the university and the Max Planck institutes of Potsdam, at the outskirts of the Berlin metropolitan area. It is a bicycle ride from the centre of Potsdam, the capital of the state of Brandenburg, and a convenient train commute from Berlin, the capital of Germany. Two international airports (Berlin Schoenefeld and Berlin Tegel) are nearby.

The Berlin-Potsdam area is one of the major research centres in Germany, with four large universities and eight Max Planck institutes. Joint seminars with the other universities have already been established (see this link). This area is also quite certainly among the regions offering the highest quality of life in the country, with an extraordinary cultural vitality in the capital Berlin, with its vibrant international flavour, as well as with the quieter and significantly smaller adjacent Potsdam, enjoying a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Status.
